,

“I’m trying to speak–to write-the truth. I”m trying to be clear. I’m not interested in being fancy, or even original. Clarity and truth will be plenty, if I can only achieve them.”
― Octavia E. Butler, Parable of the Sower

About The Book

Parable of The Sower

Octavia Butler’s Parable of the Sower, published in 1993, is set in the year 2024 and follows the protagonist, Lauren Olamina, as she embarks on a journey to forge a new path for herself and her community after her home is destroyed by fire and her family members are killed. Lauren is a fifteen-year-old African American woman who has a condition called “hyperempathy syndrome,” which causes her to experience the same pain and pleasure as those around her. The sequel, Parable of the Talents, published five years later, continues Lauren’s story as she becomes the founder of a new religion, the leader of a newly established community, and a new mother.
