When opportunity knocks for an entrepreneur – you should always be ready to answer the door. I received a phone call in July of this summer from Dr. Rev. Cassandra Gould about her vision of having a community reading room (library) where she pastors at Quinn Chapel A.M.E. in Jefferson City, Missouri. I was elated and met up with the senior pastor to assess the room that she wanted to transform. When we first discussed the project she informed me that the reading room would be named after Dr. Carolyn Vaughn Atkins.
The senior pastor of chapel spoke highly of the former educator, activist, and sorority leader during our talk.
Dr. Carolyn Vaughn Atkins was a gifted trailblazer. She was a professor, a prison warden, the first woman and African American to chair the State Of Missouri’s Probation and Parole Board and much more. I was her pastor. She was the Steward Protem, the first parishioner to invite me into her home and the first person in JC to invite me to a social event. She was a Delta and a jewel. I watched her take her last breath.
The project began in early July and ended in August. It was a joy to complete and I had the opportunity to catalog 400 books, build a library management system, and design the entire space. This project turned into the Big On Books Project through, bookista media group, my creative multimedia production company. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held at Quinn Chapel A.M.E. will be held later this month.
